Peer to Peer
| |
There are two main types of networks, a Peer to Peer and a Client to Server network. Most homes will use the Peer to Peer network to share resources such as printers, internet connections and hard drives. Below is a simple illistration of how a home network might be set up. Notice that there isn't one computer acting as a server, but that all computers are equal and can share their resources to one another. The connections that attach the computers can be "Hard Lined" or "Wireless". Most homes aren't built with networking cable in mind, so most home owners choose the wireless option which is more cost effective and a little quicker to get going. |

Client / Server |
| |
In a Client / Server network configuration (as shown in the illistration below), one or more computers act as a server, which provides services to client computers. Most small businesses use this type of network because items such as User Permissions, File Sharing, Internet Connectivity, Backups and more can be controlled from one central location by an administrator. This allows much more control of a network and is a more secure way of going about things. This type of network requires someone with experience and more technical knowledge to setup and maintain. |
